Introduced in 1830 and awarded for 21 years service in the infantry or 24 years service in the cavalry until 1870 when the period was reduced to 18 years
Insitutued in 1854 this medal continued with the same young head of Queen Victoria on the obverse for 41 years
marking the end of a distinguished chapter in Commonwealth military aviation history
